Ziegel products have a very fi ne ceramic structure containing millions of tiny air pockets. This is achieved by adding sawdust to the wet clay mix. When the clay product is fi red, the sawdust totally incinerates, leaving behind minute air pockets . This technology has been used for over 100 years to “aerate” the fi red clay and thus improve its thermal properties. The geometric vertical perforations in the block are also designed to trap air. Heat loss Heat is often lost through the mortar joints of conventional masory. The Planziegel system is designed to eliminate thermal bridging through interlocking dry perp joints and thin joint laying mortar. The Planziegel block is “planed” on the top and underside surfaces, to produce a precision masonry unit for laying with thin joint mortar. Thermal Mass Ziegel has good thermal mass which can readily absorb and store heat, in much the same way as night storage heaters do. The effects of overly warm room temperatures in the hot summer months can be staved off. Short cooler intervals can be bridged by the stored heat which is then automatically released. These natural processes help tocontrol and maintain room comfort within a Ziegel building all year round. |
